OK Today we're talking about a truck tonneau cover for my 2015 Ram Ecodiesel
This is Mopar Factory Tonneau Cover Review.
Today we're talking about a truck tonneau cover and I know that's a funny name. I don't even know where it comes from or what it means but it's essentially the cover that is equal to the top of the truck bed and covers, hides, and protects anything inside the bed of the truck.
They come in various sizes and shapes. Based on the size and style of your truck you need to match the toneau cover to size and style of the bed of your truck.
Consider a short bed or long bed length and the width is also based on what type of truck you have.
Many different truck beds are a little bit wider than others; some of the midsize or miny trucks will also require a different size tonneau cover.
The simpler less expensive covers are canvas with a few support bars in them and velcro to hold them down to the bed side rails.
The conver connects to two rails. One on each side of the Truck bed, extending from the cab to the tailgate of the truck bed.
These rails hook to the top platform of the truck bed.
The more complicated covers are ones that are either multi-section pieces of hard material like plastic or fiberglass.
Another style of them is a one piece with struts or shocks on them that help you lift them up.
They would lift up like a top to a kids toy storage bin. They all have some kind of locking mechanism that connects to the tailgate.
The one I have on my truck that we're going to look at and review today is canvas and it is a Mopar factory tonneau cover.
It fits on my Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel but I think it would fit on any Ram 1500 with the 6-foot 4 inch bed.
When we look at this tonneau you can see it has Velcro on both sides and it sticks down at an angle onto the rails that are attached to the top of my bed.
The rails are attached with the custom quick clamping system so the whole thing can come off without tools.
It is designed to lock and there's a release button that is hidden when the tailgate is closed.
Here is a link to a LEER roll up cover that will fit the Ram 1500 with a 6 foot 4 inch bed.
The locking mechanism is hidden when the tailgate is closed so it is semi secure. It also is intended to roll up to move it out of the way.
If you need to put something bigger into your tailgate. From this picture you can see it's rolled up and when it's rolled up there's two straps that kind of lock it in place and hold it from moving or flapping around. As we roll the tonneau cover up you can see there are 2 metal bars positioned in the middle thirds of the cover. These give the cover some support. On the freeway the speed limits here are around here 80 miles an hour. One Drawback about this cover is it does vibrate in the wind a little bit. If I had a harder plastic one I know that wouldn't necessarily happen.
I know this is not 100% secure but it does offer some security in the fact that prying eyes cannot see what's in your tailgate. It would take a little bit of effort to either cut it or rip it off to get into what's in the tailgate. So look at it as more of a protection from the wind and the rain. Things won't blow out of the back of your truck when you're going down the freeway.
Think about when it's raining things in the back of your truck stay nice and dry. I think tunneau covers come in every color available as long as it's black. For some reason I've never seen a colored one. I guess paint matching would be too difficult.
This seems a little bit odd but I guess the black seems to fit every truck paint color.
Tonneau covers are available from multiple manufacturers. Let's explore some of the different links to products available on Amazon. Another style that I think is really interesting and nice is the style where the slats are about 2 inches wide and all connected. The whole cover itself rolls up into an assembly like a garage door. This makes it really easy to slide it in and out. This type would be a lot more secure because it's hard plastic. The slates are also locked into a rail and not removable. This style does take up some room in the front of your bed. The mechanism that holds the rolled up cover is a bit bulky. If you were loading motorcycles in your bed there will be a little bit more of that obstacle when you put in the front tire in your shorter truck bed.
So to summarize a Tonneau cover is a very nice accessory for a truck. They come in at least 4 different styles and price ranges. Everything from a roll up canvas one to a full size hard plastic or fiberglass lid. There are at least a few choices in the middle price range and style. Some with 3 or 4 panels,and some that roll up and hide away. So start shopping and take a good close look at the styles and types and let us know which one you choose.
